Well this song certainly took its time gestating! It started as a notion in the back of my head while I was working video during a Duran Duran concert at the Twiropa club late 2003 (the club was subsequently destroyed by hurricane Katrina.) I sang the idea over and over to remember it, then quickly jotted it down when I got home. By the weekend, I had put down an entire keyboard demo. I played the song to numerous people and got some promising reactions, but with a change in band personnel, the subject matter was suddenly a bit off, and I didn't want to rewrite it. The song was shelved and almost forgotten...
...until 2010, when we were coming to the end of the studio sessions for the album 'Music For Supervillains'. We needed another song, and I had always wanted to complete this one. It also presented the opportunity for Lab Girl Elsa, about whom this song was written, to put her character to rest once and for all.
It's worth noting that Lab Girl's character had deepened considerably in the intervening years since this song was written, rendering the perspective of the song's lyrics pretty myopic and ironic, considering that Lab Girl Elsa was actually a super-spy conducting surveillance on the C.O.G. the entire time she was stationed at the Secret Lab! Of course, these lyrics are from Dr. Pinkerton's perspective so they couldn't ever have been taken TOO seriously... and Elsa had already faked her own death once, so...?
lyrics
You've seen her hanging out at all the trendy labs
Scoping out a scientist or two
She's always at the latest lectures picking up the tab
Standing there admiring the view
There must be others like her all around the world
But even so you have to ask - just who's the new lab girl?
You know her kind - she only wants your brain
She's on your mind but no-one knows her name
Lab girl what is your game?
She'll always catch your eye from clear across the room
And help to put it back into your head
She clumsier than some but always wants to lend a hand
Unless the hand in question is undead
She's not concerned with bloodstains on her nurse's dress
You'd use her as a guinea pig but who'd clean up the mess?
You know her kind - she only wants your brain
She's on your mind but no-one knows her name
Lab girl who is to blame?
Lab girl you're overqualified for many minor tasks
Despite the pigmentation of your hair
In light of this do you think it would be too much to ask
That you approach our science with more care
For seldom does a body leave our lab alive
Just keep in mind the twisted fate of lab girls one through five
We know your kind - you're not one to complain
When you lost your mind and then we stole your brain
Left it behind and walked out in the rain
Until next time when we see you again
Lab girl we're glad you came

These guys ROCK... and they have an awesome spaceship! This may be because we have not yet stolen the aforementioned spaceship, but of course that still doesn't change the fact that they ROCK. Consortium of Genius
